Speed bumps and humps

Speed calming devices improve safety but can cause discomfort or damage if taken wrongly.

Speed bumps and humps

Technique

  • Reduce speed early; avoid braking sharply on top of the bump
  • Cross straight over when possible; if diagonal, keep very low speed
  • Unload the suspension between consecutive bumps

Tips

  • Keep larger spacing to avoid accordion effects
  • Secure loose cargo and reduce speed for passengers’ comfort
  • With heavy vehicles, slow down more to protect suspension and tires
