Good preparation makes long trips safer and calmer. Use this guide as a compact checklist for the car, the driver and the route.
Vehicle checks
- Fluids: engine oil, coolant, brake fluid
- Tyres: tread depth, pressure, damage; see Tyres and maintenance
- Lights and signals; adjust aim if loaded
Planning the route and breaks

- Check weather and traffic; add buffer time
- Take regular breaks and hydrate
Driver readiness
- Sleep at least seven hours the night before the trip
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before driving
