Correct seating position, steering wheel position and mirror adjustment provide better control, shorter reaction time and lower physical strain. This is fundamental for safe driving in all situations.
How to adjust the seat
- Push the seat forward/backward until you can press the pedals fully down with a slight knee bend.
- Adjust the seat cushion height so you can see over the steering wheel with good forward visibility and to instruments.
- Backrest angle: approximately 100β110Β°, so your shoulders maintain contact when holding the steering wheel.
- Headrest at head height, as close as possible without pressing.
See also Positioning in the roadway.
Steering wheel position and grip
- Distance to steering wheel: when you extend your arms, your wrists should rest on top of the steering wheel.
- Steering wheel at chest height, pointing toward your breastbone β not your chin or stomach.
- Grip at 9β3 or 10β2 o’clock for best control during turns and evasive maneuvers.
For motorway and high speed, see Motorway driving.
Mirror adjustment: reduce blind spots
- Interior mirror: center toward rear window, horizon in the middle.
- Left mirror: turn outward until you barely see your own car in the innermost edge.
- Right mirror: same principle; balance horizon and road shoulder.
Read more in Mirror adjustment and blind spots.
Seating position and safety systems
- Minimum distance to airbag: approximately 25β30 cm from chest to steering wheel.
- Steering wheel and seat should not hinder free movement during evasive maneuvers.
- Seatbelt should lie tightly over shoulder and hip; see Active and passive safety.
Checklist before driving
- Seat: length, height and backrest angle
- Steering wheel: height/depth and free movement
- Mirrors: interior and both exterior, shoulder check confirms
- Seatbelt: tight, without twisting
- Visibility: clean windows, correct driver position to pedals
