Sun glare and low sun – techniques for better visibility

Sun glare – overview

Low sun can cause strong sun glare and reduced visibility. With proper preparation and technique, you can maintain safe visibility and avoid dangerous situations.

Preparations before driving

Quick measures while driving

  • Use sun visor and possibly sunglasses
  • Lower the seat a notch if possible to get the sun edge higher in the windshield
  • Reduce speed and increase distance. See Speed and distance
  • Increase airflow toward the window and activate AC to prevent fogging. Read Defogging and visibility

Light use and visibility

  • Use low beam also during daytime in poor visibility
  • Turn on taillights if the car doesn’t do it automatically
  • Avoid high beam in dust, haze and fog. See Use of lights and signals

Intersections and crosswalks

  • Be extra attentive to vulnerable road users who may be hidden in sun shadows
  • Make clear stops and check an extra time sideways
  • Communicate with gaze/signs when needed, see Communication with other road users
