Vehicle Regulations – overview for class B

The Vehicle Regulations set technical and use-related requirements for vehicles. For class B the key topics are roadworthy condition, lights and signals, tires and chains, brakes, and mandatory equipment. The rules are organised in chapters that describe everything from definitions to approvals of vehicle modifications.

What does “roadworthy and safe condition” mean

The vehicle must always be safe to operate in traffic. That includes:

  • Lighting and reflectors
  • Brakes and steering
  • Tires, rims and suspension
  • Visibility and wipers

Read more in Roadworthy and safe condition and follow the routines in the Safety check (technical car).

Tires and chains

Requirements for tread depth and possible use of chains depend on season and road surface. See details in Rules for tires and chains. For day-to-day care, read Tires and maintenance.

Lights and signals

Correct use and functioning of lights is fundamental. For practical tips, see Use of lights and signals. If you plan to retrofit auxiliary lights, the installation must comply with Auxiliary lights and additional lamps.

Brakes and braking technique

The braking system must be maintained and free of faults. Read more in The braking system. Combine this with routines from Safety check (technical car) and Wheel change.

Equipment and accessories

The regulations list mandatory equipment such as warning triangle, reflective vest and mirrors. See Mandatory safety equipment and secure loose items with the advice from Securing cargo and passengers.

Modifications and approval

If you change the vehicle’s technical specifications, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration often has to approve the modification before you can drive the car. Examples include:

  • Converting a van into a passenger car
  • Performance tuning that affects weight or emissions
  • Retrofitting a tow bar on vehicles without factory approval
  • Installing lifts or other special equipment

Read more about the process in Temporary plates and approval.

Control and reactions

If you breach the regulations, the authorities can order repairs, impose a usage ban or issue fees. See Sanctions: fines, confiscation, liens and points for consequences and how to avoid them. Periodic inspection ensures compliance; learn more in Periodic inspection (EU).
