Selling your car privately - contract, payment and reporting

Selling your car privately

A structured plan makes a private car sale safe for both parties. Work methodically from preparation to reporting the change of ownership. If the buyer must drive the vehicle without plates, review Temporary plates so the handover stays legal. Buyers will expect the same documentation as described in Used-car purchase checklist.

Safe payment

  • Agree on instant bank transfer or settlement at the bank. Avoid large cash payments.
  • Hand over the vehicle only after the full amount is in your account.
  • For instalments, use an escrow account or a bank guarantee.
  • Issue a receipt showing amount, date and signatures from both parties.

For insurance considerations, read Insurance: liability, comprehensive and recourse.

Handover and change of ownership

  1. Log on to Norwegian Public Roads Administration services together with the buyer and report the sale.
  2. Confirm the buyer has valid insurance before handing over the keys.
  3. Deliver the original keys, registration document part 1 and every item listed in the contract.
  4. Remove the car from toll tags, parking subscriptions and mobile apps the same day.

The buyer must approve the transfer within 10 days. You receive a receipt and may cancel your insurance once the buyer’s policy is active.

Tax and responsibilities

  • Profit is tax-free if you owned the vehicle for more than one year and used it privately.
  • Frequent sales can be considered business by the Norwegian Tax Administration.
  • Pay outstanding tolls and parking fees before handover.
  • Update toll tags, AutoPASS agreements and payment apps immediately.

Quick checklist before you meet the buyer

  • Documented condition and recent cleaning
  • Signed contract plus ID copies
  • Payment confirmed and receipt ready
  • Sale reported and insurance verified

A predictable process builds trust and shortens negotiations. Share the checklist with potential buyers to close the deal smoothly.
