The practical test proves you can drive safely and independently in Norwegian traffic. This guide covers preparation, structure, assessment and common mistakes.
What is the practical test?
An individual assessment where the examiner evaluates safety, independence, rule knowledge and vehicle control in real traffic.
Structure and timing
Typical duration is 35–45 minutes with five parts:
Element | Time | Description |
---|---|---|
Safety check | 5–7 min | Seat, mirrors, lights and safety systems |
Stationary manoeuvres | 10–15 min | Reversing around a corner and parking; see Reversing and parking |
Emergency stop | 2–3 min | Demonstrate reaction time and braking |
Independent driving | 15–20 min | Give‑way, overtaking, possibly motorway |
Evaluation | 3–5 min | Summary and feedback |
Preparation strategy
Practise all manoeuvres until automatic, train emergency stops safely, master clutch/gears, scanning and shoulder checks. Drive in city, rural and motorway, also in rain/darkness.
Test‑day checklist
Sleep well, arrive early, warm up briefly, and keep calm communication with the examiner.
Common critical faults
Fault | Example | Avoid |
---|---|---|
Red light | Running red/orange when you could stop | Prepare to stop on amber |
Collision | Contact with vehicles, pedestrians or objects | Increase margins |
Dangerous overtake | Oncoming traffic or poor sight | Be conservative |
Give‑way breach | Failing to yield | Study give‑way rules |
If you don’t pass
Listen to feedback, focus training on pointed areas, and rebook after the waiting period. Build mental resilience.
