Class B theory test β number of questions and the pass mark
Number of questions, mistakes allowed and the pass mark on the class B theory test.
One of the most common questions before the exam is simply: how many questions are on the class B theory test? The short answer is that the test has 45 questions, and you must answer at least 38 of them correctly to pass. That means you can make up to 7 mistakes. In this article we go through the structure, the time allowed, how answers are counted and what it actually takes to pass.

Number of questions and the pass mark
The class B theory test is taken on a computer at a traffic station run by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen). The test is fixed in size, and the numbers are easy to remember:
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Number of questions | 45 |
| Correct answers to pass | 38 |
| Mistakes allowed | 7 |
| Time available | 90 minutes |
| Result | Pass or fail |
The pass mark corresponds to roughly 85 percent correct. You do not get a grade or score beyond this β the result is either pass or fail. There are also no partial grades per topic area; all questions count equally towards the same threshold.
It is worth noting that both the number and the threshold can be adjusted by Statens vegvesen over time. Current practice is 45 questions and 7 mistakes allowed, but always check the official information at the traffic station before you arrive, so you plan around the correct figures. You will find a thorough walk-through of the whole test format in our overview of the class B theory test .
How much time you have
You have 90 minutes to answer all 45 questions. For the vast majority this is plenty of time β it works out to around two minutes per question, and many finish well before time runs out. There is no advantage in submitting quickly; instead use the time to read the questions carefully.
A good time tip is to go through the test in two rounds:
- First round: Answer all the questions you are confident about, and flag the ones you are unsure of.
- Second round: Return to the flagged questions and read them once more, calmly.
- Finally: Check that every question has actually been answered before you submit.
Many mistakes happen because the candidate reads too fast and misunderstands what is being asked. It is also worth knowing how long the theory test stays valid when you plan the rest of your training.
How the questions are structured
The 45 questions cover the whole class B curriculum broadly. You will meet several different formats, and it helps to recognise them in advance:
- Multiple-choice questions where you select one correct answer.
- Questions with several correct answers, where you must tick everything that is correct.
- Image-based questions, for example traffic scenes where you assess right of way or who goes first.
- Numerical answers, such as a speed limit, distance or braking distance.
The topics range from traffic rules and signs to risk, vehicle technique and the environment. A typical example is right of way: you may be asked to assess a junction and decide who must wait. If you practise right of way from the right and right of way at a T-junction , you are well prepared for this type of question. If the traffic station offers the test in several languages, you can also read about the theory test in other languages and using an interpreter .
What it takes to pass
To pass you must have at least 38 correct out of 45. In practice this means you should master the material confidently, not just guess your way through. Risk and human factors are a big topic β questions about fatigue and micro-sleep and about medication and driving ability come up often and are easy points if you have studied.
Some advice to secure the margin up to the pass mark:
- Read the whole question before you look at the answer options.
- Watch out for negations like “not”, “never” and “always”, which are often the key to the question.
- Do not change an answer without a good reason β your first interpretation is often correct.
- Practise with mock tests that resemble the real exam.
A final-week plan can lift you the decisive percentage points; see the suggestion in the article on the last week before the theory test .
After the test
You get the result pass or fail as soon as the test is submitted. If you pass, the theory is valid for a limited period while you finish your training and take the practical driving test. If you fail, you can retake the test after a short waiting period β there is no reason to panic. We have a dedicated guide on what to do if you fail the theory test .
The best insurance against failing is to practise realistically beforehand. Take a free theory test and keep training in the Eteo app, where you get questions in the same format as the real exam, so you feel confident when you sit the class B theory test.
