Trams in traffic – signals, right of way and cooperation

Trams have limited braking distance and cannot swerve. Reading the signals correctly and keeping the tracks clear keeps city traffic safe for everyone.

Tram signal aspects (A-signal)

Norwegian trams use white A-signals: illuminated lines or a dot against a dark background.

SymbolMeaningWhat you do
`` (vertical line)Proceed straight
/ or \ (diagonal)Tram will turn left/rightDo not block the swept path
(horizontal line)StopTram is halted or must wait
· (dot)Prepare to moveExpect the tram to receive go shortly

Where signals are shared, the tram obeys the normal red–amber–green sequence and may also receive arrow aspects similar to Bus lanes and HOV lanes.

Right of way and cooperation

SituationRulePractical tip
Unsigned junctionStandard right-of-way rules applyGive way according to signs and the right-hand rule
Entering/leaving tracksYou must yield to the tramDo not pull onto the rails until they are clear
RoundaboutVehicle already in the circle has prioritySee Right of way and roundabouts
Pedestrian crossingTram slows but needs distanceNever step out directly in front of a tram

Because trams cannot dodge or stop quickly, drivers should offer space even when they technically have priority.

Stops and passengers

  • Slow down near stops and anticipate passengers stepping into the carriageway. Compare with Bus at stops.
  • Passing on the right is only allowed where dedicated lanes permit it; heed the rules for Home zones and walking streets.
  • If the tram stops in the middle of the street, be ready to stop for crossing passengers.

Typical hazard scenarios

EventRiskMitigation
Wet rails and thermoplasticVery low gripCross the rails at a steep angle and slow down
Car waiting on the tracksTram cannot stop in timeMove off the rails immediately
Unpredictable pedestrian at the stopCollision riskReduce speed and cover the brake
Tram reversing or shuntingLarge blind spotsFollow staff signals and keep distance

Tips for drivers and riders

  • Plan lane changes early and signal clearly so the tram can maintain pace.
  • Avoid overtaking just before a junction or stop; wait until the tram has cleared the area.
  • Watch for vulnerable road users wherever tram tracks run close to footpaths. Read Road users and consideration.
  • When parking, ensure wheels are well clear of the rails and respect no-stopping zones near stops. Consult Stopping rules.
