Supplementary plates

Supplementary plates overview

Supplementary plates add precise limits to the main sign. Always read the main sign first, then the plates from top to bottom. Misreading time, direction or vehicle symbols easily leads to a fine or towing.

Time and day plates

PlateMeaning
Clock (09-17)Valid within the stated hours
Weekday text (Mon-Fri)Valid on the stated days
Exceptions (Sat/Sun/Public holiday)Excludes the listed days
  • Times without weekdays apply every day
  • Combined time and weekday plates narrow the rule to those periods
  • In city centres you often see stacked plates, e.g. Mon-Fri 08-18, Sat 09-15
  • For parking rules see Parking regulations

Distance, arrows and reach

PlateMeaning
Double arrowRule applies over the stated distance
Single arrowRule applies in the arrow direction
Distance (200 m)Rule starts after the distance

When several arrows are stacked, interpret them from top to bottom: direction first, then distance or stretch.

Typical combinations

CombinationHow to read it
Vehicle symbol + arrowOnly the depicted vehicles in the arrow direction
Time + parking layoutRule applies during the hours, with the shown parking orientation
Distance + exceptionRule applies for the stretch, except for the listed users

For complex parking zones check the zone entry sign as well. A parking disc plate requires you to set the disc correctly.

Reading order checklist

  • Read from the top plate downwards
  • Identify who is affected before you check time limits
  • Finish with arrows or distance to confirm where it applies
  • Look for plates on the opposite side of the street; they can differ

If you are unsure, consult the official code list in Norwegian Public Roads Administration services.

Enforcement

Parking wardens and police enforce the limits on the plates. Frequent mistakes include parking after working hours despite time limits, using loading-only spaces, or overlooking arrows that narrow the zone. Learn more about follow-up actions in Traffic control and traffic flow.
