Parking disc (P-disc) – rules and use
Learn when to use a parking disc, how to set it and which exceptions apply.
Parking discs are required on time-limited spaces marked with the supplementary sign demanding a P-disc. Setting it correctly is key to avoiding a fine, especially in city centres and resident zones with frequent inspections.
When is a parking disc required?
| Sign/notice | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Supplementary sign 831 “Parking disc” | P-disc mandatory | Set the disc when you arrive |
| Time/day (e.g. Mon–Fri 08–18) | Applies only during listed periods | Use the disc only within these hours |
| Maximum time (e.g. max 2 h) | Time limit from arrival | Leave before the limit runs out |
| See Supplementary signs for a full explanation. |
How to set the P-disc
- Turn the pointer to the nearest quarter hour after arrival
- Place the disc clearly visible behind the windscreen
- Note your latest departure time from the maximum stay
- Move the car before the limit expires – resetting the disc without moving still counts as the same stay
Typical scenarios
| Scenario | Setting | Latest departure |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival 09:05, max 2 h | Set 09:15 | 11:15 |
| Arrival 17:50, max 1 h (Mon–Fri 08–18) | Set 18:00 | 18:00 |
| Arrival Saturday 10:10, “Mon–Fri 08–18” | No requirement | Follow local rules |
| Arrival 22:10, “Mon–Sun 08–24” | Set 22:15 | 00:15 |
Digital tools and combining with apps
| Situation | P-disc | App payment | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free bay with time limit | Required | Not needed | Enforcement is based on the disc |
| Paid bay without supplementary sign | Not required | Required | Only the app/ticket matters |
| Paid bay stating “P-disc 3 h free” | Required | Optional after the free period | Use the disc first, app for extra time |
| Resident parking with time limit | Required if the sign says so | Depends on local scheme | See City driving: stopping and parking for details |
| Digital parking services record start and stop times but do not replace a disc when the sign requires one. In tight city areas it helps to combine an app reminder with the disc to stay within the limit, as described in Advanced parking . |
Exceptions and special permits
- Disabled parking permits: A valid blue badge gives exemptions where the sign states “Except with valid disabled permit”. Learn more in Parking rules .
- EV incentives: Municipalities may offer free parking to EVs, yet disc requirements can still apply. See EV benefits and rules .
- Resident permits: Some cities let residents park beyond the limit with a permit. Display the permit alongside the disc when the sign demands it.
Enforcement and sanctions
| Violation | Consequence | Inspection method |
|---|---|---|
| Missing disc where required | Parking fine | Visual windscreen check |
| Incorrectly set time | Parking fine | Photo of disc and vehicle |
| Exceeding the time limit | Parking fine | Repeat inspection with timestamps |
| Manipulated or unauthorised electronic disc | Fixed penalty | Approval check |
| Private and municipal wardens document infractions with photos and timestamps. Electronic discs must be approved by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and set manually on arrival. |
